Samantha Upton
Portrait Photographer
Samantha is currently studying BA Photography at the University of Plymouth, though she’s originally from Eastbourne, East Sussex. Half of her family lives in Czech Republic, where she often captures portraits.
Samantha discovered her passion for photography through her grandfather who taught her the basics during secondary school. Then she taught herself after the art-focused teachers didn’t cover photography. Additionally, Samantha did a two year apprenticeship at Jane de Weck Photography in Eastbourne, where she learnt the business side to photography. After two years of self-study, she went to college to deepen her skills, where she fell in love with the medium of analogue photography. She also found her first analogue camera, a Practika MTL3, and began shooting film, experimenting with darkroom techniques.
At Plymouth, she’s expanded her knowledge, learning Adobe software, creating books and making moving images. Her latest project is a book featuring photographs of her grandparents in the Czech Republic, incorporating her grandfather’s own images.
Analogue photography and portraiture is Samantha’s focus. She uses every part of a roll of film, even trying to create an artistic image with the burn line at the beginning. Samantha is a photographer that aims to bring the subject out of the photograph and capture their true selves and personality.
